Beyond Statin Therapy: Making Sense of ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway - Home Study

Activity Preview

The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) 2013 guidelines on the management of cholesterol were developed based on well-designed clinical trials.  However, additional evidence from clinical trials are now available and newer drug therapies have been approved since creation of this guideline. Moreover, several experts advocate for more aggressive approaches that go beyond the recommendations from these 2013 guidelines. As a result, a committee was convened to provide “Expert Consensus Decision Pathway (ECDP).” The goal of ECDP was to develop clinical policy based on expert opinion to target specific patient groups that are not adequately addressed by the existing evidence. The ECDP complements the existing ACC/AHA 2013 guideline on the management of cholesterol.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the recommendations from the Expert Consensus Decision Pathway (ECDP).
  2. List alternative non-statin recommendations by the ECDP for the management of dyslipidemia.
  3. Describe statin intolerance and patient cases that warrant a change in statin therapy.
