New and emerging insulin products not only expand therapeutic options but also complicate decisions for many pharmacists. These agents include insulin glargine U300, U500 insulin, and insulin degludec U-100 and U-200. In this online educational activity, an expert in the field, Jennifer Trujillo, PharmD, BCPS, CDE, BC-ADM, demonstrates the safe and effective use of various insulin therapies and describe strategies to minimize hypoglycemia and overcome patient resistance to taking insulin.   As a bonus, Dr. Trujillo has also put together five questions with rationales to further improve the participant's ability to make informed decisions regarding the management of insulin needs of patients with diabetes across the care continuum. 

Learning Objectives

After participating in Beyond Oral Antidiabetics: Exploring New Options for Your Patients (Home Study), the pharmacist will be able to:

  1. Explain the potential roles of recently improved insulins in the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  2. Describe strategies to minimize insulin-induced hypoglycemia, including patient education tools.
  3. Describe strategies that are effective for educating patients who are resistant to taking insulin.

After participating in the APhA Quick Quiz: New Insulin Products, the pharmacist will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the characteristics of recently-approved forms of insulin.
  2. Discuss effective educational strategies about safe and effective use of insulin.

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education (CPE). This home study CPE activity is approved for 1.5 contact hours of CPE credit (0.15 CEUs) The ACPE Universal Activity Numbers for the archived webinar is 0202-0000-17-116-H01-P and for the quick quiz is 0202-000-17-117-H01-P.
