This activity is intended for BCACPs in need of recertification credit and is designed based on the content outline developed by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS). This series will feature succinct commentaries about practice-changing evidence through a series of podcasts, articles. online panel discussions, and polls. This module consists of 4 activities and offers up to 2 hours of continuing pharmacy education and/or recertification credit. These activities are produced in conjunction with iForumRx and are part of the APhA professional development program for BCACP recertification approved by BPS.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Deprescribing Medications for Heart Failure with Improved Ejection Fraction

  1. Describe the role of deprescribing in the management of heart failure (HF).
  2. Evaluate the study, ³Withdrawal of pharmacological treatment for heart failure in patients with recovered dilated cardiomyopathy (TRED-HF): an open-label, pilot, randomised trial´by Halliday and colleagues (Lancet. 2019;393(10166):61-73.).
  3. Calculate the number-needed-to-treat (NNT) and -harm (NNH).

Making the Grade-Guideline Evaluation

  1. Compare and contrast the conduct and results of the VITAL study to previous literature on vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids
  2. Identify current guideline recommendations for the use of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids for primary prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease
  3. Determine if supplementation with vitamin D and/or omega-3 fatty acids would be appropriate, given an example patient case
  4. Evaluate the appropriateness of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation based on secondary and subgroup analyses of the VITAL study

Improving access to naloxone – yes pharmacists (Nar)CAN! 

  1. Describe naloxone¶s role as a harm reduction strategy
  2. Compare and contrast different naloxone access laws' effects on pharmacist autonomy
  3. Evaluate the relationship between naloxone access laws and opioid-overdose outcomes

The Power of Pharmacist-to-Pharmacist Handoffs During Transitions of Care

  1. Describe a practice model which utilizes inpatient to community pharmacist handoff
  2. Describe common barriers encountered during transitions of care.
  3. Assess the literature to describe pharmacist interventions and practice models that improve intraprofessional communication during transitions of care.
  4. Evaluate inpatient and community pharmacist roles to optimize patient handoffs during transitions of care.

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This activity is approved for 2 contact hours of CPE credit (0.2 CEUs). The ACPE Universal Activity Number for this activity is 0202-0000-19-280-H04-P.

To obtain 2 contact hours of CPE credit (0.2 CEUs) for Evidence-Based Practice Module 3, complete the learning activities, assessment with a grade of 71% or better, and evaluation questions.

Per Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) requirements, you will have one opportunity to successfully complete this continuing pharmacy education assessment. Please note that you will not be permitted to submit the assessment a second time. The current policy of the APhA Education Department is not to release the correct answers to any of our CPE tests. This policy is intended to maintain the integrity of the CPE activity and the assessment.

You do not need to complete assessment in one sitting. Once successfully completed, you will be able to claim credit.
