Pharmacists understand the definition of “gluten free” as it refers to food products and the effect of minimal exposure on gluten abstinent patients. They are able to advise them on ways to identify and eliminate further exposure when it occurs. This activity is targeted to all practicing pharmacists involved in dispensing, counseling, drug regimen review and medication therapy management of patients with celiac disease and/or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). It is also advised for pharmacists engaged in the education of pharmacists and other health professionals.
One of the primary takeaways of this webinar is to improve pharmacists’ understanding of celiac disease and NCGS and to provide pharmacists with appropriate tools that they can use when counseling celiac and NCGS patients.
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Outline the etiology, pathophysiology, and signs and symptoms of celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and identify to whom a patient with suspected celiac disease or NCGS should be referred.
Discuss the challenges associated with gluten abstinence as treatment and assist the patient with managing their disease including knowing what patient support resources are available to individuals with celiac disease and NCGS.
Describe autoimmune complications associated with inadequately treated celiac disease.
Identify resources for determining gluten content and contamination risk of medical and nutritional products before dispensing to patients with celiac disease and NCGS.
