Keep Up! is an on-demand and interactive professional development program created with the busy pharmacist in mind. Keep Up! is ACPE accredited and designed to be completed in 30 minutes, with two to three short mini-lessons on timely topics relevant to pharmacists in all practice settings. The series consists of six modules.
Patient education (aka patient counseling) is a fundamental component of pharmacy practice. However, the patient counseling strategies employed by most pharmacists have little impact on medication adherence. Patient education must be systematic and structured but personalized. Patients learn best when new information is connected to existing knowledge and skills and when it is perceived to be relevant, actionable, and congruent with their beliefs. Patient beliefs have a powerful impact on the therapeutic benefits derived from medications and pharmacists must harness the power of belief to achieve optimal health outcomes. During this brief tutorial, you'll learn about:
- The health communications model and Gagne's 9 events of instruction
- Strategies to improve patient education including signposting, chunk & check, and reflective responses
- The power of patient beliefs and how to harness them
At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:
- List the advantages and challenges of pharmacist-provided patient education
- Explain the key elements of providing patient education to advance patient knowledge or skills
- Describe the power of belief and its impact on health-related outcomes for patients
Activity type: Knowledge-based
Target Audience: Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
