Specialty medications offer the promise of improved outcomes or potential cures; however, many treatments are costly and require precise utilization management programs.  Payers must have sound clinical and administrative strategies to ensure patients have appropriate access to specialty medications at affordable cost shares.  Pharmacy providers must ensure that the investment made by the payer and patient result in the best possible clinical and economic outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify clinical and cost considerations payers face when covering specialty medications 
  2. Describe the operational and clinical tasks associated with a specialty pharmacy provider and the role of specialty pharmacy accreditation 
  3. Discuss the importance of clinical outcomes from the perspective of a payer and specialty pharmacy provider
