Hypertension Boot Camp: Tackling Tough Cases

Hypertension is ubiquitous in daily pharmacy practice, across all settings. Get an in-depth analysis of the recent changes in definitions and treatment goals, evidence-based standards of care, evaluation principles for complex cases, and medication-based challenges related to cardiovascular risk management in patients with hypertension. We’ll explore the types and causes of resistant hypertension, three cases of difficult management scenarios, and logical steps to address the barriers to treatment success. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this application-based activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain recommendations from the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guideline for treatment of patients with hypertension.
  2. Evaluate recent evidence assessing the efficacy of different blood pressure goals in hypertensive patients who present with and without comorbid conditions. 
  3. Formulate a care plan for patients with resistant hypertension.
  4. Recommend appropriate medication regimens for treatment of hypertension in patients with heart failure.
  5. Recommend appropriate medication regimens for treatment of hypertension in frail older adult patients.
