Keep Up! Transgender Care

General Information

Keep Up! is an on-demand and interactive professional development program created with the busy pharmacist in mind. Keep Up! is ACPE accredited and designed to be completed in 30 minutes, with two to three short mini-lessons on timely topics relevant to pharmacists in all practice settings. The series consists of six modules.

Activity Preview

A growing number of individuals do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth and many seek treatments to affirm their gender identity. Transgender and gender non-binary patients face stigma in our society and are not confident in the ability of pharmacists to address their unique needs. Many pharmacists feel uncertain how best to communicate with patients regarding their gender identify. Hormonal therapies are commonly used by transmen and transwomen to achieve secondary sex characteristic congruent with their gender identity. During this brief program you’ll learn about:

  • The distinction between sex and gender as well as the preferred terminology to use with patients and colleagues
  • The medication most often used to affirm gender identity and how to educate patients about expectations, potential side effects, and medication administration
  • Strategies that you can implement to improve the care of patients who are transgender and gender non-binary

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe appropriate terminology when communicating about and interacting with patients who are transgender or gender non-binary
  • Identify key teaching points about medications used for gender affirming therapy that should be shared with patients
  • Identify strategies for improving care for patients who are transgender and gender non-binary
