The national opioid crisis continues to be one of the most pressing public health issues in modern history. As the most accessible health care provider, pharmacists are positioned to play a leading role in the treatment of substance use disorder. Gaining a better understanding of how substance use disorder fits a disease state model and the true, evidence-based benefits of treatment will provide pharmacists the tools needed to help break the stigma and improve care to this patient population.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledg-based activity, the participant will be able to:

  2. Describe the neurobiology of substance use disorder
  3. Discuss the role and impact of pharmacotherapy for substance use disorder
  4. Discuss the benefits and misconceptions about naloxone
  5. Discuss strategies to improve access to buprenorphine

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This activity is approved for 2.0 contact hours of CPE credit (0.20 CEUs). The ACPE Universal Activity Number for this activity is 0202-0000-20-247-H08-P.
